Chemicals used in the manufacture of flame retardants for foam furniture inserts have been linked to problems ranging from fertility issues to cancer. But a recent law passed in California is helping to phase out these dangerous chemicals. And companies that ship nationally will comply with the California law. When shopping for furniture: Look for “TB 117-2013” on the label—that means the item may be flame-retardant–free, but confirm with the manufacturer. If the label says “TB 117,” flame-retardant chemicals were used. Brands that are eliminating flame retardants from sofas and armchairs: The Futon Shop, Ethan Allen, IKEA and La-Z-Boy.
