Environmental exposure to certain chemicals may lower testosterone levels. The increasing amounts of phthalates found in some plastics and many personal-care items are associated with up to a 34% drop in testosterone levels in men and up to a 24% drop in women ages 40 to 60. Testosterone is important in both men and women for brain function, bone density, physical growth, strength and heart health.
